Jay Barnson created a game using Python in a single week from scratch, with no budget !
He has been writing computer and console games professionally and as a hobby for over twenty years.
His first independent game release, Void War, recently won Independent Multiplayer Game of the Year for 2004.

"if you gave me a week, a fresh install of Windows, and a good Internet connection, I could build a halfway decent game with no budget whatsoever." said Jay Barnson. He knew it would be extremely difficult but he accepted the challenge !

Theme of the Game : The player will battle with various monsters with magic and combat, he will improve his capabilities through gaining "levels" of experience, and magical equipment. There will be locked and trapped doors and chests.

Jay Barnson planned his time and set certain rules before starting actual developement. The rules which he defined are :

  • Limit a tine that is 40 hours
  • Use Open Source Tools
  • No cheating, No Engines, only basic libraries / APIs

He used Python 2.3,PythonWin,PyGame, Py2EXE to compile this into an executable,Gimp 2.0, MS Paint (which comes with Windows), Free textures available from places like Toob's Tiled Textures(http://www.textureartist.net/textures/index.htm) and Mayang's Free Textures http://www.mayang.com/textures/), Audiocity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), microphone or free sound samples.

In his article he has written about his schedule, his systematic planning helped him to develope a game from scratch in a week. You can Download the Windows version of the game.
